Hiroichi Kimura, the farmer who has developed the heart-shaped watermelon, was surprised by the result. Mr. Kimura, the 3rd generation to work the family farm, took over the business in his twenty's. When asked why he chose to take over the family business, " There was nothing else I wanted to do :) " He says modestly. Getting to know Mr. Kimura, you get a sense of his passion for making watermelon.
Mr. Kimura started to making heart-shaped watermelon in 2006 when he got the idea from a neighbor who commented, " It would be interesting to see a watermelon in the shape of a heart. " At the beginning, Mr. Kimura rejected the idea of making heart-shaped watermelon, saying " The watermelon is supposed to be round... Nothing elese should exist! " But after initially being skeptical of the heart-shaped watermelon, he found himself being intrigued by the idea of making something different and special. " It might be a little challenging but I can try...! " Eventually, Mr. Kimura began to experiment and test ways to grow a heart-shaped watermelon.
Since then, Mr. Kimura's reserch and experiment had started. First, he started by making a heart-shaped mould to put the watermelon in. He thought that if it was put in a heart-shaped mould when it was young then it would eventually grow into the heart-shape. As he imagined, the watermelon came out beautifully heart shaped. Unfortunately though, it wasn't sweet at all.
Mr. Kimura investigate cause of the failure, and found out the pressure produced while growing in the heart-shape mould was adversely affecting the taste. He tried many different sized moulds that's not too tight for the watermelon , but was still unsuccessful. Next, Mr. Kimura had to find a variety of watermelon that could be grown under these conditions. After experimenting with many varieties, he finally found the one that could be grown in the heart-shaped mould and still be sweet.
Now Mr. Kimura is consistently producing sweet and beautiful heart-shaped watermelon which are being sold every spring in department stores nationwide.
Mr. Kimura's heart-shaped watermelon have a crunchy consistency that gives way to pleasantly sweet juices. Once you've taste it and swallow down, you're left with a sweetness that linger on a tongue for long time.
Mr. Kimura has the sincere desire that his heart-shaped watermelon exceed customers expectations. He continues to experiment with soil and growing conditions with the hopes of producing an even sweeter watermelon. His passion is to satisfy customers with these unique and delicious heart-shaped watermelon's.
The heart-shaped watermelon is the result of Mr. Kimura's lifelong knowledge and experience with growing watermelon's, as well as many years in study of varieties of melons, developed his heart-shaped mould, researched for the ideal soil conditions, and many experimental. Still, he continues to be passionate about to challenge himself to produce even more sweeter and wonderful watermelons. A challenge, Mr. Kimura says, " Will never end !! "
